POCO ROOFS COULD BE GOING GREEN

Port Coquitlam's future is looking green.

A zoning bylaw amendment brought forward at Thursday night's community and economic development committee meeting proposes green roofs for very large commercial and industrial buildings.

If the amendment is approved by council, green roofs - engineered roof systems planted with vegetation - would be required for all buildings with a footprint larger than 5,000 square meters (53,820 square feet).

Director of development services Kim Fowler said green roofs are only one component of a larger sustainability initiative with several components, including a sustainability checklist, city land sale strategy and a green building and social incentive policy.

POCO FIRM HELPS ROOFTOPS GO GREEN

Lauri Tuomisto was designing breezy rooftop gardens long before they were trendy. His favorite is the herb garden at the Fairmont Waterfront hotel, built in the early ‘90s.

"Guests felt like they were in the Garden of Eden," he says, "even though they were in the middle of a city."

Tuomisto is a Service Manager at Design Roofing & Sheet Metal Ltd., a PoCo based business specializing in green roof technology. The term “green roof” refers to any rooftop planting, but most involve raised beds of shrubs, trees and flowers. Newer green roofs are flatter, lighter and use layers of membranes containing water and soil.

Design Roofing creates these membranes which are later planted with hardy, slow-growing grasses.

Click to view: The LEED rating system is based on achieving a certain number of points, which are allocated for design choices defined within the standard. There are 6 sections to LEED that target specific design criteria:

1. Site Selection
2. Efficient use of Water
3. Energy and Atmosphere
4. Materials and Resources
5. Indoor Environmental Quality
6. Innovative Design

Depending on the number of points achieved, the building can attain Platinum (52 – 69 points), Gold (39 – 51 points), Silver (33 – 38 points) or LEED certified (26 – 32 points) status. The intent of the LEED standard is to provide a design guideline and third-party certification tool for green buildings. Therefore, products cannot be LEED certified – only buildings can be. An architect or designer can make product choices that will help a building qualify for LEED points.
